TRAINING STEPS

Steps to Obtaining School Bus Certificate

1. Obtain a CDL Manual & Study Sections 1 through 5 and 10-13                          

Visit any Mass Registry of Motor Vehicles or download & print from:   https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2018/05/04/CDL%20Manual_Combined%20File_0318_0518.pdf 


2. Obtain current DOT Physical dated within 90 days.  Below is a list of locations                      that perform DOT Physicals.  (Don't schedule until you are ready to take permit                  tests at the MA RMV)

If the Medical Long Form is signed off by a Nurse Practitioner, Physicians Assistant or Chiropractor-- a Medical Physician needs to sign the Physical 


3. Go to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to obtain your CDL Class B Permit. Please use this checklist to prepare for your visit o the RMV: https://www.mass.gov/doc/acceptable-forms-of-identification/download  

Before going to the Mass RMV to take you permit test, we highly recommend visiting the website below.  These sites offer free practice tests to better prepare you for the registry.  Once you are scoring 90% or above on these practice tests, you are ready to head to the registry to take your permit & endorsement tests.

You will need to take the following computerized tests based on the manual you                              have studied:

  • General Knowledge: 60 Minutes/ 50 Questions 

                        (You will need 40 correct  to pass)     

  • Passenger Endorsement: 20 Minutes/ 20 Questions

                        (You will need 16 correct  to pass)

  • School Bus Endorsement: 20 Minutes/ 25 Questions

                        (You will need 16 correct  to pass)

  • Air Brake Endorsement: 25 Minutes/ 25 Questions

                        (You will need 20 correct  to pass) 

Steps to Obtaining 7D Certificate

  • Call our office to set up 2 Hour training session at our Cherry Street Office

                 [The cost of training is $100.00]

  • Any applicant who has ever resided in another state and has relocated to Massachusetts must include with the application: 

  1. Certified Out-of-State Driving Record within the preceding 90 days of        application submission
  2. Certified Out-of-State Criminal Record Report effective within the preceding 90 days of application.

  • CORI Form: CORI must be filled out completely & notarized

                 CORI must accompany your application.

  •  Medical Requirements: Applicant's medical exam must be conducted within the preceding 90 days of application submission.  Exam form must be signed by a Medical Doctor.
  • Mail your completed application, medical form, CORI form, and any Out-of-State       
  • Driving Records/ CORI to the address on the application OR:
  • You can go to the Mass RMV website and access your profile and complete the  application process on line.  The registry will notify you via post mail of your approval to take to the registry office.
  • Once your 7D has been mailed to you- please call to start the application   process.
